“Clock Tower” - Preview of Foundations
This poem is taken from the first Part of the book, Finality of the Heart, the section that focuses on the bright and blooming feelings that come with the beginnings of a relationship, and the supporting influence of friends and family:
Clock Tower
It’s days away, but
I count down the minutes
until I see you again
because there’s nothing else here
to fill the emptiness in my heart
except the sound of your name
echoing through its chambers
and the promise that you would fill them, me,
again,
again,
again,
My love,
My friend.
When you’re really excited about something, it can feel like the hours and days drag on while you impatiently wait. I think this is doubly true if it’s someONE you want to see, whether it’s that special someone (or one who could be that special someone) or a friend you haven’t seen in ages. This poem obviously is more relevant to the former scenario, as our speaker, in this poem and others in Part I - Foundations, feels the experience loom like a metaphorical tower over him. Ah, the excitement and turbulence of young love!
Something I’m personally counting down the minutes to when you read the full book, Finality of the Heart.
