“Truest Prayer” - Preview of Faith
This poem is taken from the second Part of the book, Finality of the Heart, and it contains poems about matters of spirituality, discernment, and seeking the truth. Some poems are reflections, theological musings, and calls for grace and peace, but all showcase a season of prayerful journeying. I felt that this Part was important to include both to further chronicle my own spiritual journey and to convey that we should always be mindful of and asking for God’s help and will in pivotal times in our lives (and indeed in all times):
Truest Prayer
Every moment faintly,
though specifically at night
when I close my eyes to
cross my hands
in gratitude and glory,
I envision a world
we share, united,
perfected,
as we truly live
together like never before,
but more than that,
I pray,
that not my world be manifest,
but rather the best world possible
for her
be made real,
a world worthy of her beauty,
and that I,
if it be blessed,
have a place in it
and,
only if it be blessed,
that it be by her side
forevermore.
While there are numerous poems that might be categorized as a form of prayer in this book, the dramatically named “Truest Prayer” is the one that encompasses the core of this Part’s message. To truly love someone means to want the best for them and of course it’s natural to want to be a part of that “best,” to be by that person’s side within it. You may have heard the phrase before that “God is Love” and I believe this to be true. Therefore, to me, there can be nothing more beautiful to not only yourself be united to God, to Love itself, but to share in that unity with someone you love so that you may know that they have the fullness of joy and to walk the path to Heaven together.
Will our speaker’s prayer be answered and he indeed find a place by his beloved’s side? Or will he be found unworthy of such a life? Both fates are explored to their fullest in the poetry collection Finality of the Heart.
